You are cordially invited to attend the Meet the resident: Adrian Alecu on 13nd of October at K18 Gallery (Koroška cesta 18).

Born in Bucharest, Romania in 1972, where he spent first 17 years of his life growning up in a typical workers family and living in a typical communist Block house in the middle of the communist dictatorship of the Ceausescu regime. From 1986 to 1990 visited high-school - Liceul Spiru Haret Bucuresti and in 1990 moved to Denmark and afterwards to Germany. There he studied (2008) Fine Art at the Hamburg state academy of higher artistic and scientific education (HfBK) in the class of Franz E. Walther. In 2011 he begun a postgraduate Art program at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht NL. Two years later visited the Theoretical Art program lead by E-flux director Anton Vidokle at the Ashkal Alwan institute in Beirut.
Alecu is interested in daily visual phenomena and their relationship to the socio-cultural environment, how far our visual behaviour is influenced by the socio-cultural conventions as well as the relationship between the mass culture-images and the ideological meaning behind of it. His work often manifests as a map which is - beside an useful orientation and navigation tool - also an indicator of the space practice of the habitants, implicitly as a part of popular culture. In that context he frequently uses the film noir concept - semantic meaning- of mapping in film, as a performative gesture of moving in which it becomes 'inscriptive practice' itself, establishing a connection between the traveller and the territory.
